2. Know Your Camera 

It may sound obvious, but you should get to know your camera. Even fully-automatic models will have different flash settings for day or night. This can affect shutter speed and aperture which in conjunction with the built-in light meter that can impact film exposure. Shutter speed is the amount of time that a camera’s shutter is open while the film is exposed. The shorter the shutter speed, the lighter the film is exposed. The aperture on the other hand is the measurement of how much light can enter a camera’s body through the lens. You don’t have to adjust these settings if your camera is fully automatic. However, it will change automatically depending on how you use flash settings. It is worth shooting a few rolls to get a feel for how your camera handles different situations before you go out on the road. If you use a manual camera, it’s important to experiment with the settings at least to become comfortable making adjustments. 

3. Gridlines Can Be Helpful  

When using a mobile camera, gridlines can be used to balance your shot. Turning on the gridlines in your camera is one of the best and easiest ways to improve mobile photos. That superimposes a series of lines on the screen of your smartphone’s camera that are based on the “rule of thirds” — a photographic composition principle that says an image should be broken down into thirds, both horizontally and vertically, so you have nine parts in total. This theory states that if you place points or interest along these lines or intersections, your photo will appear more balanced and level. It will also allow viewers to interact more naturally with the image. 

4. Lock the Focus 

Center-stage is a great place for a performer to be. However, the middle of your picture is not always the best place for your subject. Bring your picture to life by simply moving your subject away from the middle of your picture. Start by playing tic-tac-toe with subject position. Imagine a tic-tac-toe grid in your viewfinder. Now place your important subject at one of the intersections of lines. You’ll need to lock the focus if you have an auto-focus camera because most of them focus on whatever is in the center of the viewfinder. 

5. Pay Attention to the Flash 

It is the most common flash error to take pictures beyond the flash’s range. This is a big mistake. Pictures taken beyond the flash limit will turn out too dark. The maximum flash range for many cameras is less than 15 feet, or about five steps. What is your camera’s flash range? Look it up in your camera manual. Can’t find it? Don’t worry. All you need to do is position yourself so subjects are no farther than ten feet away.  

6. Cropping Technique  

Cropping your photo closer to the camera is one way to improve its quality. However, it is important to know how to do this effectively. Limit the amount of background and make your subject the main focus. Skies can make wonderful backgrounds so be sure to keep as much as you can. If you are traveling alone and someone is taking your picture, you can ask them to place you in the center, left, or right of the frame. You can adjust the crop to your liking later. Do not try to squeeze too much into your photo. Instead, pick one focal point to crop your image around.
