Why You Should Switch To Reef Safe Sunscreen

Something that is not often talked about but can make a great difference, is how the sunscreen you choose can be harmful to the environment. 

Now for this article I will not be focusing on packaging, even though I always recommend recyclable or biodegradable packaging rather than single use plastic. But I will be discussing the harmful chemicals used in a lot of sunscreens.  

The term reef friendly sunscreen is becoming more and more popular every year but the term ‘reef friendly’ cannot be taken as fact as it is not regulated. So, do not blindly trust products with this description. It’s always important to check the active ingredients on the back of the product.  

Why reef safe sunscreen is important 

Ingredients in sunscreen disrupt coral reproduction and growth development causing coral bleaching. Up to 6,000 tons of sunscreen are estimated to wash up into coral reefs around the world every year.
