Well me too, I don’t care what people say I think it’s a healthy obsession and can bring a sense of peace to a room. Today I’ll help you learn a bit more about candles in general so that next time you go out to re stock your 50 candles you will go with a bit more wisdom on your side.
Types of candles
Soy Wax
A plant based vegan candle that burns slowly, it can hold the scent well. This type of candle burns cleaner and produces less soot.
Paraffin wax
Can Contains petroleum, Shale oil or sometime coal. Even though this is one of the most common candles Paraffin burns quickly and produces more smoke. Especially as this is not an ecofriendly option, I would definitely look at favouring other candle types.
Beeswax
These candles come with a subtle honey scent naturally, they produce no smoke and are one of the longest burning candle types.
Palm Wax
Bad for the environment with palm oil linked to deforestation.
Coconut wax
Holds on to scent very well and is a plant-based option. A lot of the time these candles do have blends of soy wax in them for a longer bun.
Bayberry wax candles
Made with the Bayberry plant, they are most recognised for their natural olive-green colour.
Gel Candles
Made from mineral oil and resin, these candles give a beautiful clear look with flowers or decorations usually placed inside. They burn for a long time and produce a fair bit of light.
Types of wicks
Braided wicks are the optimum choice as the take longer to burn. How many wicks in your candle can also determine its life. The more wicks usually the faster the candle will bun but you also gain an even melt with more light produced from the wicks.
Cotton –
Usually braided or knitted for a longer burn, also contains a core material that helps keep the wick straight such as zine, copper, or tin.
Wood –
produces a crackling sound and is typically wider in size, which can either be good or bad depending on your preference of candle aesthetic. These types of wicks take longer to burn than its thinner competitors.

How to make your candle last longer
- Trim your wick ¼ inch before you burn
- Only have your candle lit for 2 to 4 hours at a time
- Do not light again until candle is completely cool and dry
- Use a sheet of tin foil to wrap around the outside of your jar to even out your wax
