Hello Armies! This is Mr. Frog HUBient and today I will give you my first impression about a fun and frantic couch co-op adventure game for 1 to 4 players set in a stunning voxel world. Riverbond.
Riverbond is an easy and fun game. You can have up to four local players join you in taking on eight mini-campaigns. Each one takes between 15 and 40 minutes. Each campaign is made up of several quests, and you can achieve a variety of objectives. You will need to defeat enemies, take down all furniture in a room or find a key to move forward. You’ll meet many NPCs along the way that will give you advice and little tidbits. It’s easy to fight enemies. All you have to do is switch between melee and ranged weapon types, then attack with twin-stick controls. Then roll out of harm’s path. You’ll also be able to participate in light platforming, and search for treasures.
Although it may sound basic, Riverbond is easy to pick-up and play. You’ll also be treated to charming visuals, full of colorful voxels that create every character and environment. It’s adorable to watch the little guys dance and run during loading screens. The audio has a soothing soundtrack that fits each campaign, as well as sound effects that make it more satisfying to beat down enemies. It’s an enjoyable experience to see Riverbond’s world come alive in all its visual and aural splendors.
You’ll unlock new character skins as you progress through the eight campaigns. Some of these skins are from indie games like Bastion or Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime. Although they don’t alter the gameplay, these additional characters look cute so it makes for a great reward. There are many weapons you will find, including a giant glove with which to slap your enemies and a spear that has a squid on. It’s great fun to experiment with different weapons to discover their capabilities. Unfortunately, they don’t last forever as they are removed after you finish a campaign. The gameplay feels fresh, despite the fact that there is so much variety in the characters and weapons.
Riverbond is a great game for anyone looking for a co-op adventure. It lacks replay challenges and rewards so you won’t be able to play it for more than a few hours.
