What’s up, Armies! Mr. Frog Hubient here and I’m back with another Dota 2 Hero Spotlight. Today we’re going to feature a hero being mainly used for support. IO!
Io The Wisp has the lowest win rate of any hero ever in Dota history. Dota buff’s win rate monitor shows that Io’s team wins only two out of five matches. Nearly a decade worth of data has contributed to Io’s 41% win ratio. Dota 2’s pub communication is a disadvantage to Io because players are more focused on their game than voice chat. The act of Tethering a player requires them to pay attention to comms, adjust accordingly and listen. In a tournament environment, all five players are open mic, it is much easier to Coordinate, Relocate ganks and Overcharge timings.
Io is a unique game that focuses on sticking with another player and helping them to become a better player. Wisp’s support kit doesn’t allow it to do the same tasks as other players. Io does not have stun or silence and is slow to apply. Io can provide a lot of healing and spirits that are a great way to scout the surroundings. However, Io’s low win rate is due to its lack of standard support tools.

Finally, Io is very dangerous when played poorly. Solo Wisps are one of the most vulnerable heroes on Dota 2. While a Lion or Disruptor may use their spells in order to escape from enemies, Tether’s range and communication are limited. Most pub players consider using Io’s ultimate to save cores to be a death sentence. Teleporting out of Relocate returns is something that most players have never practiced. These problems together make up the most unsuccessful hero in Dota 2’s history.
Although Io is sometimes revealed in public matchmaking, it is revered by the Dota 2 pros scene. Many of the negatives mentioned above are either eliminated or transformed into positives. Pro Dota 2 players communicate more frequently and are more familiar with each other’s playstyles. These traits allow the Io to stay in touch with its partner. Relocate is also valued by the pro scene as an initiation tool.
Io’s unique tool set allows for experimentation. Anathan “Ana” Pham, OG, took the world by storm at The International 2019 with hard carry Io. Many pro players have tried out different core roles and unique support builds. Although Wisp might not be a good sign in a pub match, it makes Io an omnipresent force on the pro scene.
So, that’s it for our Dota 2 Hero Spotlight. Would you rather use this hero in rank game? Were there any important points we missed? Please leave a comment. Join our discord channel so we can play together at discord.gg/hubient. Thank you, Armies and catch you to the next one.
