Being an influencer is not just about looking pretty in front of a camera or posting inspirational quotes. Read these ten commandments Hubient has made for you to avoid making mistake in the realm of influencers and, of course, the internet.
Just when you think you’ve got the influencer thing already in the bag, you’ll realize that you still have a lot of things to remember before exposing yourself online. As an influencer, you always have the urge to say what’s on your mind. But you need to be careful about that because it may be the reason of your own destruction. You need to find a way to convince people that you are worthy of their attention.
But aside from being open on social media, there are still some risks that you might have forgotten exist. Here are ten commandments Hubient made for you to remember that you have to be careful, as an influencer, to avoid getting yourself in trouble in the name of the internet.
1. Thou Shalt Never Lose Sign of Who You Are
On social media, you mostly show everyone the good part of you. It is easy to get lost in all of the positive numbers, likes, and comments. Being authentic and transparent to your audience is important. It is one of the cornerstones of effective social media standards. It doesn’t mean that you have to show every bit of yourself online. Do not portray yourself as something that isn’t you. Remember, being an influencer is to influence other people in a good way. Be honest. Be open. Be YOU.

2. Thou Shalt Not Limit Yourself
As an influencer, one of your jobs is to see what your audiences are interested in. This is one of the opportunities you can use to show and share your own beloved talents. Being diverse and open to other opportunities also helps your followers to experience it. Expose yourself to different genres and do not stay only in your comfort zone. You have plenty of options to try that and can still connect to your brand — from fashion to food and even to travel.

3. Love Thy Neighbor as You Love Yourself
So true that one of the most popular commandments from the Bible is also a commandment for influencers. You cannot lie when this phrase also applies to literally anything we do here on earth. Don’t spread rumors or hate just because someone is much more popular than you. What you need to do is do the opposite. Lift them up instead. Collaborate with them. Prove yourself to others that you are mature enough not to do such unmannerly things. Use your influence for good. Treat other influencers like how you would treat yourself and how you would like others to treat you.

4. Thou Shalt Not Steal Contents
This should be obvious, and one of the things that should never be forgotten.
It is never a great idea when you steal someone’s hard work and effort. Although it is true that almost every content idea has been made online already and it’s impossible to make one that has never been seen.
You must keep in mind there is a big difference between inspiration with your own personal version and just making an identical creation to the original. Always give the original credit, It takes less than a minute to do and gives you piece of mind from being called out.

5. Thou Shalt Optimize for Discovery
Think outside of the box and answer the question, “What makes you stand out?”. Aside from making your content eye-catching, there are variety of ways wherein other people can discover your content. The top two are geolocation and hashtag search. People can easily see your content, especially when you have set a topic keyword hashtag or location tag. If people were to look for ideas where to go on vacation, your hashtag about that one time you went on the beach has probably been on someone’s planned trip.

6. Accept Opinions and Improve for the Better
If someone said anything about you or your content positively or negatively, you don’t have to respond immediately. Reflect on it and think about how you would reply to it adequately. That way you won’t get yourself in trouble.
Let the storm pass and calm yourself. Never respond with a heart and mind full of extreme emotion online. It just always ends up in a disaster. You can never go wrong with being kind and patient.
7. Thou Shall Not Be Greedy but Be Patient
Just because you are an influencer, it’s okay to get everything you want. But there’s a difference between healthy ambition/negotiation and greed. You do not need to have every gadget out freshly in the market. You don’t have to pay someone for exposure in exchange for pure hard work. Believe Hubient when we say that we know every talent and influencer’s purpose. We see how hard they work. But being consumed by greed and pride will never take you anywhere.
Make use of what you have and show a little bit of compassion to everyone you encounter. Not everyone is easy to work with. You might face consequences if you have found the wrong person to deal with.
8. If in Doubt, Stop While You’re at It
If something has caught your attention, whether it is an issue or problem and you are not sure about it, just STOP while you’re at it. Opening up a topic about which you are uncertain can give you a negative result. You are not forced to comment or react just because it is the talk of the town. You should try to understand the topic before you express your thoughts on it. Google is free. Use it.

9. Thou Shall Not Share Personal or Too Much Information about Yourself
As an influencer, social media is like your second home and your followers are your second family. It’s fine to tell people things about yourself, but not sensitive personal information. It’s for your own safety and security. Social media is a very public place. Anyone has access to check you out.
A better way to keep your personal life to your influencer life is by having a separate platform for close family and friends to keep private matters all to yourself. Keeping boundaries for yourself and your social media is much better than regretting it later.

10. Thou Shall Take Social Media Rest
Life is more than just a screen full of posts and likes. Take a day where you stop scrolling and take a look at what’s in front of you. Turn off all of your notifications (except the ones that are absolutely necessary) and spend the day by yourself. Go out and chill with some friends. Read a book. Multiple studies say that being online 24/7 can affect your mental and physical health. So, do whatever you want as long as you are taking a break from your double life as an influencer. Simply exist outside of your teeny-tiny screen.
